Landrover 88″ refers to the wheel base of Series 2, 2a and 3 SWB (short wheel base) Landrovers.

Series 1 Land Rovers were built as 80″, 86″ and 88″, but the series 3 classic Landrover only came as an 88″ or 109″.

The 88″ can be fitted with a truckcab, hood and sticks, or hardtop. Many people prefer the hardtop as they assume it will be warmer, but in reality, the 88″ SWB soft top is generally the warmer vehicle, as you do not suffer with condensation, and the canvas 88″ ragtop serves well to protect you from the elements.

The series 3 88″ softop makes a good buy, especially if it’s tax exempt, and has an overdrive. The overdrive unit gives more relaxed cruising. These overdrives were made by Fairey. They also manufactured Free wheeling hubs, which many people like. These FWH help to reduce the rotation of non essential parts, thus improving the fuel economy. Mated to a Fairey Overdrive unit this can increase fuel consumption by 4 or 5 mpg.

We have sold several Land Rover 88″ SWB Station wagons and they always prove to be popular. The Station Wagon had four rear, inward facing fold up seats, and could transport 6 people in comfort. Of course all the classic Landrovers can be altered, and it is not difficult to remove the hardtop and fit a hood and stick set for Land Rovers. Exmoor Trim manufacture these hood and stick sets and they are distributed by John Craddocks. The 88″ hood stick sets are simple to fit with a little patience, and we have converted many. Obviously sometimes one has to source a rear drop down tailgate, which will need to be painted, and sometimes the inertia reel seatbelts will need to be relocated.

A tip for threading the 88″ canvas is to push a piece of flexible wire through the canvas, otherwise it’s almost impossible to thread.
